Radio silence

I got hooked on Harry Potter seven years ago when I was teaching. I bought the first book at the school’s Scholastic book fair, and then it sat for several months. I thought it was just a kid’s book; I only got it because my students were raving about it. Once I read it I dashed out and got the second and third books and tore through them. Book 4 I read by flashlight during a thunderstorm because we lost power. Book 5 I went to a midnight release…after a friend and I had a drink; had to steel ourselves for a gajillion hyper 10 year olds in the middle of the night. I can’t remember how I got Book 6, but I know life halted here at home until I finished it. I’m going to a midnight release tonight to get my book. It’s the last one and I can’t see myself doing this over any other book or series.

But there are a lot of idiots out there. Specifically, the freakin’ idiots at the Baltimore Sun and the NY Times who reviewed the book in yesterday’s paper. I caught part of an interview with the troll who reviewed it for the NYT and eventually had to la-la-la through it. News, my foot. You guys did it for the money, and you are mean. Bullies. I only hope kids who love the series didn’t catch the review.

So I’m going on radio silence until I finish the book. I could finish it this weekend, it could take me a week. I do have kids, after all. I don’t want to accidentally read any spoilers; it would truly break my heart to read them. I want to lose myself in the story, in this other world this gifted writer has created. It’s going to kill me to not read blogs, or post comments, but reading is my first love, and I don’t want to ruin it. I’m not even going to watch the news, or read news websites.

Once I finish the book, I will post a non-spoiler review; I don’t want to ruin it for slower readers (truly, I am a sprinter when it comes to reading). But until then, I’m going to be conspicuously silent. Know that I’m reading and loving every minute of it.
